Knitting garments designed and produced by Andrea Fanney in Iceland in recent years will be on display among sculptures by Sigurjón Ólafsson and graphite works from Canadian artist Carl Philippe Gione’s recent exhibition entitled Laugarneshughrif.
The exhibitions relate to nature in Laugarnes, Andrea’s works are inspired by the city’s bird life, and Carl has sought to recreate patterns he sees in the rocks and cliffs of the Laugarnes beach.
Sunday November 3rd at 3 pm Laugarnes Gathering
Laugarnestangi peninsula is the last unbuilt section of the historical Laugarnes farm, which reaches back to the time of the Nordic settlement and once occupied the majority of the current Reykjavík area. There is the only unspoiled beach on the north coast of Reykjavík, it is a bird sanctuary and there are areas with relatively natural vegetation intertwined with ruins and fields from over 1000 years of farming, making Laugarnestangi the most complete and important area of cultural landscape in Reykjavík.
Attempts have been made to design the Laugarnestangi for buildings and major roads but well-wishers have so far succeeded in averting it. Currently the area is being narrowed with embankments and plans for high buildings.
The goal of the residents' association "Friends of Laugarnes" is for Laugarnestangi to be formally protected as a natural and heritage site within the city of Reykjavík.
Admission to the museum will be free on this day and there will be signup lists in support of the demand for protection. Further program will be announced here later.
